Beeswax melts across a higher range than soy or paraffin, and in the one lab comparison that exists it burned about a third slower by weight. That is most of the honest difference. Almost everything else you have read about candle wax and your health rests on a study that was never peer reviewed.
I sell beeswax candles, so you should read the next twelve hundred words with that in mind. I am going to tell you the true things I know about wax, including the ones that do not help me.
The part that is actually measurable
Three numbers hold up.

The melting ranges come from a peer-reviewed review of beeswax and from the US government's chemical reference for paraffin. Note the word range. None of these waxes has a melting point. They all soften across a span, which is why a candle slumps before it pools.
The burn rates come from a single study at Iowa State in 2002 — and it was funded by the Iowa Soybean Promotion Board, which is worth knowing before you lean on it. It measured beeswax burning roughly a third slower by weight than paraffin. One study, never replicated. An independent chamber study in 2021 found burn rate varies widely by candle type, which is a polite way of saying that wick size and candle diameter matter about as much as the wax does.
So: beeswax burns slower, probably. I will not tell you it burns three times longer. Nobody has measured that.
Are soy or beeswax candles better?
For burn time, beeswax, modestly. For price, soy. For scent throw, soy — and if you want a scented candle, soy is the better carrier, which is a real reason to choose it.
For everything else, the honest answer is that the difference is smaller than the internet believes, and I would rather say that than sell you a story.
What is the healthiest type of wax for candles?
Here is where I have to take something away from my own side.
You have probably seen the claim that beeswax candles release negative ions that clean the air, neutralise dust and pollen, and help with asthma. It is on hundreds of candle websites. It is on some of my competitors' pages.
There is no measurement of ion output from a beeswax candle anywhere in the scientific literature. Not a small study. Not a weak one. None.
What does exist is research on air ionisers, which are machines built specifically to do this. A Cochrane review of six randomised trials concluded that ionisers cannot be recommended for people with chronic asthma. A review of thirty-three studies found no consistent effect of air ionisation on mood, relaxation or sleep. The US EPA says ion generators may be relatively ineffective against pollen and house dust.
If purpose-built machines do not clear that bar, a candle does not.
The other half of that story is the claim that paraffin candles fill your house with benzene and toluene. It traces to a 2009 presentation at a chemistry conference by researchers at South Carolina State University. It got enormous press. It was never peer reviewed at the time, it was funded by a grant whose stated objective was promoting soybean candles, and when it finally reached a journal eight years later it was one that appears on Beall's list of potentially predatory publishers.
The best data we have points the other way. A Danish cohort study followed 6,757 adults over nine years and found no association between frequent candle use at home and cardiovascular or respiratory hospital admissions.
So the healthiest wax is: mostly a question that does not have the answer people want it to have.
What are the disadvantages of beeswax candles?
Four, and I would rather you heard them from me.
- They cost more. Beeswax is a by-product of honey, produced in small quantities, and it prices accordingly.
- They are not vegan. Soy and coconut wax are.
- They hold scent poorly. Beeswax has its own faint honey smell and does not carry added fragrance well. For me this is the point. If you want a candle that perfumes a room, buy soy.
- The colour varies. Ours run from pale gold to darker amber depending on the batch, because nothing is added to even them out.
What is the healthiest candle you can burn?
The one you ventilate. That is the only advice in this article that comes from a regulator rather than a candle maker.
The EPA lists candles among indoor sources of particulate matter — alongside cooking, fireplaces and smoking — and advises making sure there is proper ventilation when you burn them indoors. That applies to every wax, mine included. An independent chamber study found ultrafine particle emissions are highest in the first hour of a burn.
Open a window. Trim the wick. Do not burn a candle for six hours in a sealed room. That is a more useful sentence than anything about wax type.
Why ours are beeswax anyway
Not for your lungs. For the burn.
A meditation candle has one job: to end. It has to burn for a known length of time and then stop, so that the candle is the timer and you are not checking a phone. Beeswax burns slowly and evenly enough that twenty minutes is reliably twenty minutes, and it holds a narrow taper without additives. It also smells faintly of nothing much, which matters when the whole idea is to give your attention one thing rather than two.
That is the reason. It is a manufacturing reason, not a health reason, and it is the true one.
